Why Career Counselling is a MUST?

Passion, Interest, Aptitude, etc. should be the factors to decide one's future. However, let's take a look at what factors people are actually considering while making a decision about the next educational option or the career path.

Factors considered in Decision Making
  1. Marks
  2. Financial Yield
  3. Available Options
  4. What others are doing?
There is a boy in my neighbourhood who recently started his 11th standard. When I met his mother, I asked, "What is his plan after 10th?" To my amazement, she replied, "We are waiting for the marks. We'll decide after the results." Then I asked the boy, "What are you going to take?" He said, "I don't know, I will decide after results." The boy who had commendable artistic skills is studying science. When I had a discussion over this, his mother said, "His father suggested him science because we have farms at our native that he can take care of in the future. He was also worried because his friends had already begun their science tuition classes." After a few days, when I asked about his whereabouts, she said, "His marks are not as good as earlier now." Let me tell you he was very good with marks earlier and even now, he has gained back the same pace but what about the boy's satisfaction?

Importance of Career Counselling
Career Counselling has many perks with certain cons. Let's have a look:

  • Educational Plus Career Guidance
  • Professional Advice
  • Self Assessment
  • Growth Potential
  • Strengths and Weaknesses
  • Pros and Cons of all streams
  • Clarity towards decision making
  • Better Sight of the future
As you see above, with the help of professional advice, you get to have a better picture of the possibilities of your success and failure in a particular path. This is because career counselling involves psychometric and aptitude tests that help you to know your strengths and weaknesses. This will enable you to know your growth potential and to make a better decision. Besides, the success of a career highly depends on your education. Hence, academic counselling becomes very important to choose the right career path.

Who should take Career Guidance?
  • Students
  • Parents
  • Teachers
Parents and Teachers play an important role in the decision making of a child. Hence, it should be mandatory for the teachers to have ample knowledge about the career options available as well as the parents because their suggestions have a major impact on the child. Parents' Career counselling becomes even more important because being parents, they tend to give suggestions based on their worry and emotions. At times, they ignore the interest of their child and impose their will which may turn to a huge failure.

Important Tips to the Students
  • Consider taking some real guidance right from 8th standard because the route to education can only lead you to the right path of career.
  • Ask as many questions as you can.
  • Don't simply follow the herd.
  • Take time but don't take wrong decision
  • Career counselling may increase your confusion but all you have to consider your interest and your aptitude.
